ConcernedApe Crafts Games Passionately, Unswayed by Profit
Stardew Valley creator Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has disclosed that he receives no payment for crossover events featuring his beloved farming simulation game, explaining that his motivation stems purely from being "a fan of the other titles, or believing players would genuinely enjoy the collaboration."
This revelation arrives as the community anticipates a crossover between Stardew Valley and Infinity Nikki, scheduled to launch on September 1. While specific details remain unclear, player reactions have been notably divided, with some criticizing the timing as a potentially convenient diversion from recent leak-related controversies.
"Over the years, Stardew Valley has participated in several collaborations with other games," Barone stated on X/Twitter yesterday. "To clarify, I never accept financial compensation for these partnerships. My decisions are solely based on personal appreciation for the other games, or the conviction that our players would find them enjoyable."
Notably, Infinity Nikki's official X/Twitter account directly addressed Barone's comments.
"We sincerely appreciate you expressing your perspective. Causing any unintended concern was never our intention. This collaboration represents our heartfelt tribute – a free love letter to Stardew Valley from our development team to the community," read their response.
"Developing this content felt like collectively nurturing a small farm. The dedication and meticulous craftsmanship you pour into your universe inspires our own pursuit of creating comforting gaming experiences. We continue learning from your work daily."
Contextually, the negative response appears more related to unfortunate timing than the collaboration itself. The Infinity Nikki community has expressed dissatisfaction since version 1.5 introduced contentious modifications, including narrative revisions and increased resource requirements for completing outfit collections.
Such crossovers remain infrequent for Barone's flagship title. Stardew Valley has previously partnered with only select games like Balatro and Terraria.
In May, Barone confessed he "didn't want to be defined solely by Stardew Valley," citing this as the driving force behind his current project Haunted Chocolatier. However, fans shouldn't anticipate an imminent release – the developer recently acknowledged "substantial work remains," particularly as he believes the new game must "surpass Stardew Valley's excellence".
