Microsoft to Integrate Copilot AI into Xbox App and Games

As part of Microsoft's ongoing initiative to integrate artificial intelligence across its products, the company is set to introduce its AI Copilot into the Xbox gaming experience. This new feature, known as Copilot for gaming, will offer players advice, help them recall their last gameplay session, and perform various other tasks to enhance their gaming experience.

The rollout of Copilot for gaming will begin with Xbox Insiders through the Xbox mobile app in the near future. Copilot, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already integrated into Windows, will bring a range of functionalities to Xbox users. At launch, players will be able to use Copilot to install games on their Xbox, a task currently achievable with a single button press on the app. Additionally, Copilot can provide information on play history, achievements, and game library, as well as offer recommendations on what to play next. Users will have the ability to interact with Copilot directly on the Xbox app during gameplay, receiving answers in a manner similar to how it functions on Windows.

One of the highlighted features at launch is Copilot's role as a gaming assistant. Players can ask Copilot for tips on beating bosses or solving puzzles, with the AI sourcing answers from online guides, websites, wikis, and forums. This functionality will soon be available on the Xbox app as well. Microsoft is committed to ensuring the accuracy of the information provided by Copilot, collaborating with game studios to reflect their vision and directing players to the original sources of information.

Microsoft has ambitious plans for Copilot beyond its initial features. In a press briefing, spokespeople discussed potential future uses, such as serving as a walkthrough assistant to explain game functions, remembering item locations within games, and helping players find new items. Additionally, Copilot could offer real-time strategy suggestions and tips during competitive games, explaining how and why certain engagements occurred. While these are currently just concepts, Microsoft is determined to deeply integrate Copilot into regular Xbox gameplay. The company also plans to collaborate with both first-party and third-party studios for further integration into their games.

Regarding privacy and user control, Xbox Insiders will have the option to opt out during the preview phase. However, Microsoft has left open the possibility that Copilot could become mandatory in the future. A spokesperson emphasized that during the mobile preview, players will have control over their interactions with Copilot, including access to conversation history and the actions it performs on their behalf. Microsoft promises to remain transparent about data collection, usage, and user choices regarding personal data.

IGN has learned that Copilot's utility extends beyond player-focused applications, with Microsoft planning to discuss developer use at the Game Developers Conference next week.
