Vampire Survivors film talks stalled over game's plot absence

Poncle, the studio behind Vampire Survivors, has revealed the challenges of adapting their hit game—originally announced as an animated series but now shifting toward a live-action film—notably highlighting that "the game has no storyline."

The developer confirmed in a Steam post that they're "still collaborating with Story Kitchen on a live-action movie," despite initially announcing an animated adaptation last year. Poncle emphasized how tricky it will be to translate Vampire Survivors' simple yet frantic gameplay—centered on overwhelming enemy waves—into a compelling film.

"As we mentioned previously, instead of rushing into production, we've waited to find the right creative partners," Poncle explained. "Adapting Vampire Survivors beyond gaming demands fresh ideas, creativity, and deep familiarity with its unique charm—a tough combination to perfect. And let's be honest: the game has no story—or does it? That unpredictability makes the project exciting."

The studio acknowledged the irony during the initial announcement, joking: "Obviously, Vampire Survivors' most crucial aspect is its narrative." With the adaptation's direction still uncertain, no release window has been confirmed.

A chaotic gothic horror rogue-lite, Vampire Survivors tasks players with strategizing against relentless monster hordes—where small upgrades can cascade into overpowering victories. What began as a modest Steam indie grew into a cultural phenomenon through viral success.

Poncle has since expanded the core experience with 50 characters, 80 weapons, and major DLCs including an ode to Castlevania.
