Hang

The Hang, a fascinating instrument within the idiophone class, hails from Switzerland and has captured the attention of musicians and music enthusiasts worldwide. Crafted meticulously, the Hang consists of two half-shells made from deep drawn, nitrided steel sheets, which are glued together at the rim. This construction results in a hollow interior and a unique 'UFO shape' that is instantly recognizable. The top side, known as the "Ding," features a central 'note' and is surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields,' all meticulously hammered into the steel. On the other hand, the bottom side, referred to as the "Gu," is a plain surface with a rolled hole at its center. Striking the rim of the Gu produces a tuned note, adding to the instrument's versatility. The Hang is also commonly known as a handpan.

The Hang operates on similar physical principles to the steelpan but is ingeniously modified to function as a Helmholtz resonator. This innovative design is the culmination of extensive research into the steelpan and other musical instruments, showcasing the dedication and creativity of its creators.
