The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has solidified its status as a major hit in 2025, surpassing impressive milestones just one week after its release on April 22. Not only did it achieve a peak concurrent player count of 216,784 on Steam, but it also became the third best-selling game in the U.S. by dollar sales, trailing only behind Monster Hunter: Wilds and Assassin's Creed: Shadows according to Circana's Mat Piscatella. This achievement is even more remarkable considering that Circana's sales charts do not account for players accessing the game via subscription services like Microsoft's Game Pass, where Oblivion Remastered was also made available upon launch.

The success of Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, extends beyond its sales figures. The game boasts significant visual and feature enhancements, running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. Key improvements include revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, new dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have been integrated, leading some fans to argue that it's more akin to a remake than a mere remaster. Bethesda, however, has clarified their decision to categorize it as a remaster.

Given this triumph, speculation about future Bethesda remasters is rife, with many pointing towards either Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas as potential candidates. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on Fallout 3, has suggested that a remaster would significantly enhance the game's gun combat, aligning it more closely with the improvements seen in Fallout 4. Nesmith emphasized that Fallout 3's initial foray into shooter-style gameplay didn't meet contemporary standards but believes the advancements made in Fallout 4 could be retrofitted to a remastered Fallout 3, enhancing the RPG shooter experience.

The remastering process for Oblivion wasn't just about updating it to the standards of 2011's Skyrim but elevating it to a level that visually surpasses even Skyrim's most recent updates. Nesmith has gone so far as to call The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered "Oblivion 2.0," highlighting its substantial overhaul.

As Bethesda continues to juggle multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI and potentially more Starfield, alongside ongoing work on Fallout 76 and the Fallout TV series set to explore New Vegas in its second season, fans have much to look forward to.
