Owlcat Games has unveiled The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a narrative-focused action RPG inspired by the acclaimed sci-fi television series.
The studio, renowned for CRPGs like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, is transitioning to a cinematic third-person perspective resembling Mass Effect, featuring cover-based combat, class abilities, squad management, and romantic subplots.
Series enthusiasts will recognize returning characters voiced by original cast members (though specifics remain undisclosed). Players embody a Pinkwater Security operative stranded amidst chaos on Eros Station, eventually commanding both a crew and spacecraft while traversing the solar system.
"This project fulfills our long-standing ambition to create an ambitious sci-fi action RPG," explained Creative Director Alexander Mishulin. "The Expanse's grounded, politically complex universe perfectly complements our storytelling philosophy - where player decisions carry tangible weight."
Game Design Producer Yuliya Chernenko acknowledged Mass Effect's influence: "That trilogy defined sci-fi RPGs for our generation. We're honoring its legacy while advancing the genre with hard-SF authenticity, dynamic combat, and morally nuanced storytelling - complete with romantic possibilities."
The gameplay loop mirrors BioWare's classic formula: customize your captain (choosing between Earth, Martian, or Belter origins), manage relationships with fully realized companions, and engage in tactical firefights where two squadmates provide direct support while others contribute strategically.

The experience faithfully recreates iconic locations including Ceres Station, Martian Congressional Republic territory, and Earth's lunar colonies. The narrative explores signature Expanse themes - political intrigue, interstellar conflict, and humanity's precarious expansion into space.
Chronologically, events parallel the first two-and-a-half TV seasons (or corresponding novels), intersecting with established canon while introducing original storylines.
While no launch date is confirmed, Owlcat announced impending releases on PC via Steam/Epic/GOG and current-generation consoles. The studio maintains separate development teams for this flagship title alongside their Warhammer 40K projects, ensuring dedicated resources.
"We guarantee this production won't compromise our other ongoing developments," the studio affirmed regarding their parallel work on Warhammer titles.
