Angklung: Traditional Musical Instrument

The term "angklung" originates from the Sundanese word "angkleung-angkleung," referring to the player's movements following the rhythm. Meanwhile, "klung" represents the musical note produced by this unique instrument.

Each note is created by differently sized bamboo tubes. When shaken, these tubes produce beautiful melodies. Therefore, playing angklung requires collective participation to create complete musical compositions.

Crafting the Angklung

Angklungs are typically made from black bamboo (Awi wulung) or white bamboo (Awi temen), which turns yellowish-white when dried. The instrument consists of 2-4 bamboo tubes of varying sizes, bound together with rattan.

Playing Techniques

Playing angklung is relatively simple - players hold the frame (top part) while shaking the bottom section to produce sound. There are three fundamental techniques:

  1. Kerulung (Vibrato): The most basic technique where both hands shake the tubes side-to-side continuously.
  2. Centok (Snap): Players quickly pull the tube against their palm to create a single percussive note.
  3. Tengkep (Mute): Players vibrate one tube while holding others still to isolate single notes.

Regional Variations

Throughout Indonesian history, various regions have developed distinct angklung types:

TypeOriginCharacteristics
KanekesBaduyUsed exclusively for rice planting ceremonies
ReogPonorogoAccompanies Reog dance; produces loud, two-tone sounds
Dogdog LojorBantenUsed in rice harvest rituals; played by six musicians
BadengGarutOriginally for farming rituals, later adapted for Islamic teachings
PadaengBandungDiatonic version for modern musical ensembles

Modern Evolution

The Padaeng angklung, developed by Daeng Soetigna in 1938, represents a significant innovation with its diatonic scale. This modification allowed angklung to integrate with Western and modern music. Later, Handiman Diratmasasmita further refined the instrument for international compatibility.

Cultural ambassadors like Udjo Ngalegena have played crucial roles in promoting angklung worldwide, helping preserve this UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage.
