Three Kingdoms chess:象棋
Imagine a chess game that merges the epic narrative of the Three Kingdoms with the strategic depth of Xiangqi, a traditional Chinese chess game. This innovative blend not only introduces various gameplay modes but also allows players to conquer all levels, challenge legendary heroes, and master chess endgames with ease. Xiangqi, originating from China, is a two-player confrontation game with a rich history. Its simple yet engaging pieces have made it a beloved chess activity worldwide.
Chess Pieces
Xiangqi features 32 chess pieces, divided into two teams: red and black, with each team comprising 16 pieces categorized into seven types. The composition is as follows:
- Red Pieces: 1 handsome, 2 rooks, 2 horses, 2 cannons, 2 advisors, 2 elephants, and 5 soldiers.
- Black Pieces: 1 general, 2 rooks, 2 horses, 2 cannons, 2 advisors, 2 elephants, and 5 pawns.
Movement and Rules
Handsome/General
The red team's leader is called "handsome," while the black team's leader is the "general." These pieces are pivotal, as capturing the opponent's leader is the ultimate goal. They can only move within the "palace" (nine houses), moving one square at a time vertically or horizontally. Importantly, the handsome and general cannot face each other directly on the same vertical line, as this would result in an immediate loss for the player whose turn it is.
Advisors/Taxis
Known as "Shi" for the red team and "Taxis" for the black team, these pieces are confined to the palace and can only move diagonally one square at a time within this area.
Elephants/Phases
The "phase" for red and "elephant" for black move diagonally two squares at a time, a move known as "flying the field." Their movement is restricted to their side of the "river," and they cannot cross it. If another piece blocks the center of their path, they are unable to move, a situation referred to as "blocking the elephant's eye."
Rook (Chariot)
The rook is the most powerful piece in Xiangqi, capable of moving any number of squares along a straight line, horizontally or vertically, as long as no piece blocks its path. Known as "the chariot's straight path," a rook can control up to 17 points, earning the saying "one chariot equals ten soldiers."
Cannon
The cannon moves like a rook when not capturing, but to capture, it must jump over exactly one piece, friend or foe, a maneuver known as "firing across the screen" or "jumping the mountain."
Horse
The horse moves in an "L" shape, moving one square in one direction and then diagonally one square. This movement is known as "the horse walks the day." A horse can reach up to eight points around it, but if another piece blocks its initial move, it cannot proceed, a situation called "tripping the horse's leg."
Soldiers/Pawns
The "soldier" for red and "pawn" for black can only move forward before crossing the river and cannot move backward. After crossing the river, they gain the ability to move left or right but are still limited to one square per move. This increase in mobility significantly boosts their power, leading to the saying "a small pawn crossing the river can challenge a chariot."
In Xiangqi, players alternate turns, embodying the strategic principles from Sun Tzu's Art of War, such as "winning without fighting" and "subduing the enemy without battle." Victory is achieved by checkmating or trapping the opponent's general or handsome. The red team moves first, and the game continues until a win, loss, or draw is determined. Through the intricate dynamics of attack and defense, players enhance their cognitive skills, navigating the game's complex interplay of reality and deception, and the balance between the whole and the parts.
