Ex-Bethesda Dev Predicts Fallout 3 Remaster to Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat

by Hunter May 05,2025

With the successful release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speculation is rife about which Bethesda game will be next in line for a remaster. Many are betting on Fallout 3, especially after a leak in 2023 hinted at its remastering. Bruce Nesmith, a designer of Fallout 3, has shared insights on how Bethesda might enhance this 2008 post-apocalyptic role-playing game.

Nesmith highlighted that the gun combat in Fallout 3 was "not good," suggesting that a remaster would significantly improve this aspect. He pointed to Fallout 4 as a benchmark, noting that the shooting mechanics in Fallout 4 were a substantial improvement over Fallout 3. "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained. He acknowledged the effort put into enhancing gun combat in Fallout 4, stating, "I know in Fallout 4 there was a lot of work done on the gun combat, because Fallout 3 is the first time they ever tried to do a shooter-style game. And, well, I think the work that was done was amazing."

The Oblivion Remastered, crafted by remake experts Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts a plethora of visual and feature enhancements. It supports 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, but the improvements extend beyond just visuals. The leveling system, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus have all been refined. Additionally, new dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have been introduced. These changes have been well-received by fans, with some suggesting that Oblivion Remastered is more akin to a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified their decision to opt for a remaster over a full remake.

Nesmith believes that Fallout 3 Remastered would follow a similar path of enhancement as seen in Oblivion Remastered. He noted that the original Fallout 3 combat did not meet the standards of contemporary shooters at the time, but improvements made in Fallout 4 could be integrated into the remastered version. "Also, it’s an RPG shooter, it’s not a run-and-gun shooter. But a lot of work was done on that for Fallout 4. So I anticipate seeing a lot of that work go into it, assuming they’re doing the same thing," he stated. Nesmith also praised Oblivion Remastered, suggesting it could be considered "Oblivion 2.0" due to its impressive upgrades.

Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing support for Fallout 76, and the upcoming Fallout TV show, which will explore New Vegas in its second season. This flurry of activity promises an exciting future for fans of Bethesda's RPGs.
