"Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Impacts System Resources, Final Specs Revealed"
The tech experts at Digital Foundry have unveiled the final tech specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting that the GameChat feature significantly impacts system resources, raising concerns among developers. This feature was introduced during last month's Nintendo Direct, where it was revealed that GameChat can be activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con.
With GameChat, players can not only engage in conversations but also watch each other play, whether they're enjoying the same game or different titles. The feature is enhanced by a built-in camera and microphone, which Nintendo claims performs reliably across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is designed to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most impactful online initiative in years.
Digital Foundry reports that Nintendo offers a GameChat testing tool to developers, which simulates API latency and L3 cache misses similar to those experienced in real-world GameChat scenarios. This allows developers to evaluate GameChat's impact without running live sessions. The presence of such tools suggests that GameChat does affect system performance in some way, prompting Digital Foundry to speculate on how it might influence game performance for end users. Whether or not GameChat affects performance will remain uncertain until the Switch 2 launches on June 5.
In addition to the GameChat discussion, Digital Foundry disclosed the Switch 2's memory configuration. The console reserves 3GB for the system, leaving 9GB available for games. This is a notable shift from the original Switch, which reserved 0.8GB and allocated 3.2GB to games. Such allocations mean that a significant portion of the Switch 2's resources is dedicated to system functions, a common practice among consoles where developers do not have full access to GPU resources.

The Switch 2 boasts a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen capable of displaying at 1080p resolution (1920x1080), a significant upgrade from the 6.2-inch screen of the original Switch, the 7-inch screen of the Switch OLED, and the 5.5-inch screen of the Switch Lite. Furthermore, the Switch 2 supports HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz, allowing games to reach up to 120fps when supported by both the game and the user's setup.
When docked, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K resolution (3840x2160) at 60fps, or at 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. These enhanced graphical capabilities are facilitated by a custom processor developed by NVIDIA. For a deeper dive into the specifications, Digital Foundry's detailed analysis is highly recommended.
