Virtua Fighter Debuts at Evo 2025

by Olivia Oct 23,2025

While not yet ready for gameplay demos at Evo, the newly announced Virtua Fighter project emerged as one of the event's most thrilling reveals after Sega and RGG Studio debuted an exciting trailer during Finals day. This marks the first significant update for the fighting game franchise after more than two decades of dormancy.

At the event, I had the opportunity to interview Riichiro Yamada, producer of the New Virtua Fighter project, discussing his vision for modernizing the classic series to compete with contemporary 3D fighters.

Gameplay Evolution

The prototype footage shows remarkably fluid animations with characters physically blocking each attack. How representative is this of the final product?

Riichiro Yamada: Visually, we're about 70% there. We'll showcase more during tomorrow's EVO presentation [Editor's Note: Interview conducted pre-trailer]. We're rapidly approaching our core vision for the combat system.

Modernizing a Classic

How are you updating Virtua Fighter's formula for today's fighting game landscape?

Yamada: While Virtua Fighter began as accessible three-button gameplay, it grew increasingly complex. Virtua Fighter 5 represents completion of that evolution cycle.

Moving forward, we must innovate beyond gameplay - improving functionality and modernization are equally crucial for commercial success. Simply replicating the past won't suffice.

Core Philosophy

You've described Virtua Fighter with "innovation" and "reality." Could you elaborate?

Yamada: Innovation initially meant graphical breakthroughs, but with CG technology plateauing, we now focus on creative gameplay concepts.

The "reality" refers to that visceral impact sensation - that physical feedback when attacks connect. We're expanding this beyond combat into all aspects of the experience.

Character Evolution

Is this a franchise reboot? Characters like Akira now appear significantly redesigned...

Yamada: We're evolving existing characters while maintaining their essence. Akira appears older because we're advancing their stories. Our goal isn't to replace but enhance designs for modern audiences.

The Stella reveal teased connections to Sarah Bryant, but I can't disclose specifics yet. Fans should stay tuned for future announcements.

Control Scheme Philosophy

Will you maintain Virtua Fighter's iconic three-button system?

Yamada: While respecting Yu Suzuki's original accessibility vision, we're rethinking controls for home play rather than arcade environments. Button count matters less than preserving intuitive gameplay.

Future Faces

Will Akira remain the franchise mascot?

Yamada: Introducing new protagonists carries risks, as Yakuza's transition to Ichiban demonstrated. While we'd like to spotlight fresh faces, Akira's legacy continues resonating strongly with fans.
