Atomic Heart 2 Deepens RPG Elements for Ultimate Freedom

The CEO and Game Director of Atomic Heart 2 shares key insights on the gameplay enhancements planned for the upcoming sequel. Discover more about the game's refined Open World RPG mechanics, increased player narrative influence, and immersive side activities.
Atomic Heart 2 Aims to Deliver a Deeper RPG Experience
Expanded Open World Exploration and Dynamic Living Environments

While Atomic Heart 2 is still several years from release, developer Mundfish has started revealing what players can look forward to in the sequel. In a recent Q&A with Wccftech, CEO and Game Director Robert Bagratuni detailed plans for an expanded RPG system, emphasizing a living, reactive world and a range of immersive in-game activities.
"Yes, we are introducing a more developed RPG layer in Atomic Heart 2, but we're approaching it the Mundfish way—integrating it naturally into the world and gameplay, rather than adding complexity for its own sake."

Although the original Atomic Heart was praised for its unique alternate Soviet sci-fi aesthetic, inventive weaponry, and experimental combat, Mundfish recognized that the open-world experience had room to grow. Fans and critics pointed out the limited interactivity, calling for more dynamic encounters and a richer sense of immersion.
Bagratuni responded by stating, "We've listened closely to all the feedback and understand that the open world in AH1 wasn't perfect. With Atomic Heart 2, we're committed to making major improvements in this area."

To create a more engaging world, Atomic Heart 2 will feature a "much more open structure" with "larger interconnected areas that allow greater freedom in exploration, revisiting locations, and interacting with various game systems." New vehicles and movement options—such as paragliding—were showcased during its Summer Game Fest 2025 debut, and Bagratuni stressed the inclusion of additional space for player discovery and replayability beyond the main story.
Elaborating further, Mundfish shared its goal to make environments feel "less like static backdrops" and more like a living, responsive world. While specific mechanics are still under wraps, players can anticipate "dynamic factors like changing time of day and weather that influence both the atmosphere and gameplay."
Bagratuni also emphasized that "everything remains grounded in the story and the logic of the world—the increased scale is designed to enhance immersion, not to overwhelm it."
Enhanced Player-Driven Content and Greater Control Over the Narrative

Bagratuni clarified that "various activities" available between main story missions will reward player curiosity. This likely refers to side quests and unlockable content, though specifics were not explicitly confirmed. Mundfish reiterated that all additions remain aligned with the game's core identity.
"We aren’t transforming the game into a checklist-driven open world. Everything retains the handcrafted, surreal style that fans love."
Players will also experience stronger narrative agency and more influence over mission outcomes and in-game events. Bagratuni alluded to some form of companion-driven interaction, though the complete scope of this feature has not yet been detailed. As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding a more active role for allies in gameplay or narrative.
Refined Progression Systems, Weapon Customization, and Expanded Skill Trees

Without divulging specifics, Bagratuni noted that combat was a highlight of the original—an element the team intends to expand upon in the sequel. Mundfish is focusing on more in-depth weapon customization, broader skill trees, and meaningful progression routes that empower players to tailor their playstyle.
"The impact, diversity, and creative freedom in combat resonated strongly with players. That positive reception meant a great deal to us and set a high standard for the sequel," Bagratuni added. "With Atomic Heart 2, we're pushing even further. To ensure we get it right, we've begun internal playtesting much earlier this time. Whether it's moment-to-moment gunplay, skill usage, or enemy reactions, our aim is to make every encounter feel more polished, strategic, and rewarding."
